The Presidential Candidate for the Sierra Leone People’s Party, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio has said that he will eradicate the widespread illegal fishing in the country after being elected President.
Bio made this statement on Friday, 2nd March while addressing residents of Shenge in the Moyamba District.
He said that eradicating illegal fishing will help to save resources for the country as well as providing a livelihood for local fishers. He fumed that because the APC government has not been able to manage the sector well, it is losing an estimated annual revenue of US $ 1.3 million due to illegal fishing monies which he said are crucially needed to fund social services, health, and education in the country.
In tackling the mammoth of problems facing the fishing sector, the presidential hopeful stated that his government will revise the existing fisheries policy and finalization of the fisheries and aquacultural legislation, develop a web-based database of all industrial fishing fleets, implement effective and sustainable surveillance system as well as strengthening the capacity of the competent authority to certify fish and fisheries products for exports.
Bio ended by assuring that his government will create a profitable fisheries sector that will contribute significantly to socio-economic development through sustainable management and utilization of fisheries resources while also conserving the environment, hence called on the voters to support his presidency.
