It is disgraceful that a national newspaper can deliberately publish a front page story that is based on misrepresentation of facts, lies and a politically motivated smear campaign. Such a skewed reporting by Calabash Newspaper does not only expose its prejudice but most importantly give a bad image of many other national newspapers which practise responsible journalism.
The Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio as a very experienced statesman with a wealth of knowledge in international relations, recognised during the interview on African Young Voices Television (AYV TV) the important bilateral relationship between Sierra Leone and the United States. As President he will continue to strengthen that relationship and deepen the ties between the two Nations.
Further, Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio also mentioned during his AYV TV interview of having a good working relationship with the United States Embassy in Sierra Leone and through his Presidency citizens of United States will always be welcome to visit Sierra Leone. Therefore, every American living in Sierra Leone or those wishing to travel to Sierra Leone should be assured that under the Presidency of Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone will embrace them.
As Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio has stated many times, the coming elections will be very critical for the growth and development of our country. Hence, the media has the responsibility to ensure that the national discuss focuses on the challenges we face as a country and what Presidential Candidates and Political Parties are offering the voters in terms of policies and programmes. This will enable voters to make informed decisions at the elections.
Like we have done over the years, we welcome any public scrutiny of Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio because we are confident in his leadership experience and ability to articulate the issues that matter to ordinary people. However, we are strongly opposed to any attempt by a newspaper to misrepresent his person or statement through a deliberate smear campaign.
