Attack on SLPP Regional office in Kenema
The Sierra Leone People’s Party is greatly disturbed by the serial and systematic perpetration of violence on our membership and party offices across the country. We are particularly worried about the recent unprovoked attack on our members and Regional offices in Kenema. For the benefit of the general public, civil society organizations and members of the international community, on the 26th February, 2018, our members were attacked in our Regional Office in Kenema by APC members clad in their party colours while processing through the main Hangha road where our party office is located. In the process, they pelted missiles at our members and destroyed the portraits of our flag bearer. Upon the arrival of the police, tear gas canisters were fired on our office premises and some of our members were mercilessly beaten including our District Council Candidate, Mr. Mr. Mohamed O’ Level Sesay while a few others also sustained injuries.
You could recall that our Presidential candidate, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio had committed himself and the SLPP to a violent-free election and we have lived to that commitment since the start of this campaign. However, in spite of our commitment to a peaceful electoral process devoid of all violence, the APC is hell bent on derailing the peace and tranquility of the electoral process.
Listening to Alfred Karrow Kamara on 98.1D’s Good morning Freetown this morning, he stated that the Police are yet to accretion the cause of the incident though the APC in their usual lieing spree are all over the place fabricating stories that their Flagbearer Dr. Samura Kamara was attacked though the Police has clearly and unambiguously stated that Samura Kamara had been gracefully escorted out of Kenema . It was only after his departure from Kenema that the APC thugs returned to SLPP office and attempted to set it ablaze but for the timely intervention of the few guards who live within the vicinity, the office would have been completely razed to the ground. Eye witness accounts also state that the PRO of the ministry of Agriculture who should have been working in Freetown was seen brandishing a pistol threatening to kill as his pistol was licensed. Others at the scene also included the Resident Minister East, Mr. Karamoh Kabbah. This substantiates wide spread claims doing the rounds that the Internal Affairs Minister, Rtd. Maj. Ismael Sengu Koroma had recently distributed pistols to senior APC party members to intimidate and threaten opposition supporters.
Similar incident of well-organized attack on SLPP members and supporters had also taken place in Tokeh on Sunday, 18th February 2018, in Kamalo on the 20th February 2018.
These spate of violence incidents perpetrated by the APC party is a worrying development few weeks before elections day. Therefore, we are again calling on our development partners and moral guarantors to ensure that the APC commits itself to peaceful and non-violent elections. The SLPP wishes to reiterate its commitment to peaceful elections but also maintains that we will stand firm against any form of political violence against our members and supporters.
We call on the APC to join us and other political parties in civility and respect the principles of democracy.
